Raw: Chocolate Avocado Milkshake

After my raw kick about a month ago, in which I went mostly raw most of the time (if you’re gonna make fun of this, you don’t know how hard it is to eat completely raw!), I realized I had lost about 10 pounds in two weeks.  But weight isn’t indicator of health: in this time, I also felt better, wasn’t tired, had lots of energy, had even clearer and prettier skin, and all around felt awesome.  Then, of course, as all good things come to an end, it kind of got away from me a bit (eating dinner out and craving french fries and whole foods’ vegan chocolate chip cookies will do that).
But! My faith has renewed and I am going to back to a mostly raw diet.  At the very least, I will do completely raw one day a week.  One of my favourite vegan bloggers, Vegan Crunk, does a Raw Food Tuesday.*  For simplicity’s sake, I think I’ll stick with that.

peppermint patties!

I used to absolutely love york peppermint patties. delicious, rich, and melt-in-your-mouth… yumm! sadly, I haven’t had them since I went vegan.

Review: The Sprout House

Recently, I heard news of a brand new vegetarian/vegan food cart opening on the streets of Denver. I had to check it out, and went for lunch today, where I had a vegan grilled veggie pita.
The Good:

  • The food was definitely edible.
  • The cart is all vegetarian–no meat at all.
  • It is up-front about being vegan–even says it on the menu.
  • It provides awareness, however small, for the veg lifestyle.
  • All food and products are locally grown and sourced on the menu itself.

The Bad:

  • The food was only mediocre.
  • Only half of the items had a vegan option, while only two were vegan by nature. (I was really looking forward to Black Bean Sliders and Oatmeal Raisin cookies, but neither were vegan.)
  • The owner himself eats meat.

Overall, I give it 7/10.  I might go back and try something else, but don’t expect me to be a regular.

Reason #2 I love being Vegan: It’s Healthier!

One 7News Journalist and her husband decided to go vegan see what the health benefits were. They found they had more energy and felt better, and found plenty of delicious food. They both lost weight and lowered levels of triglycerides, blood pressure, and cholesterol.


Hmm… health benefits and a clean social conscience?  Go vegan.

Vegan Ice Cream at the Crushery

I had fantastic vegan ice cream tonight at the crushery–a little cafe off of South Pearl Street and Iowa.  They make ice cream to order with liquid nitrogen, using a coconut milk base (for vegan) and freezing it quickly with the liquid nitrogen.  not only does this sound cool, but it looks even cooler.

To top it off, you can add any mix-ins you like, cold stone style (watch out, not all are vegan-friendly). I went with a delicious cookies’n’cream.

The chef also let me know that they could make the ice cream with any kind of milk.  Got a craving for chocolate almond milk ice cream? Bring it down, with whatever mix-ins you like, and they’ll make it special for you (and not charge you full-price either).

The Crushery also has bagels which are vegan, fresh baked every morning.  Unfortunately, they don’t have any other vegan menu items, while the associate I spoke to admitted it was about time they did.  So keep bugging them and maybe we’ll get more vegan eats there.

Reason #1 I love being Vegan: Gulf Spill Seafood

The FDA has announced that although crude oil has the potential to taint seafood with flavors and odors caused by exposure to hydrocarbon chemicals, the public should not be concerned about the safety of seafood in stores at this time” (http://www.fda.gov/Food/ucm210970.htm).

This is great, because I always love my tuna coated in crude oil.  It makes a great marinade.  Go vegan.
