Vegan Almond Joys!

Having finally perfected the vegan Almond Joy candy bar, I would like to share it with you.  My tiny problem is that I have this tendency to not measure, which makes recipes a little difficult to share :/  But I will do my best to guesstimate, and I encourage you as well to put away the measuring cups and go by touch and taste and feel.  You’ll be amazed at where it might get you…

Since I had absolutely no recipe to even start from here, I used my peppermint patty recipe as a jumping point.  You may see a few similarities.  And, if you’ve made the peppermint patty recipe, you know a little bit about the consistency that we’re striving for.  so, here goes! Continue reading

Reason #3 I love being Vegan: It Makes Laundry Easier

Okay, I know you’re thinking, “seriously, what?” But hear me out.

When I used to wear wool and cashmere sweaters, I used to always worry about drying them on accident.  They shrink up real bad, and there’s no going back once they’re shrunk. Since I became vegan and have stopped wearing those products, I no longer have any wool or cashmere to wash.  Which means I never have to worry about pulling it out before I put my clothes in the dryer.  Which means that laundry is easier.  And, let’s face it, anything that makes laundry easier is a major plus.  Go vegan.

A while ago, I was scanning the web for some good vegan recipes.  One of my favourite recipe blogs is Vegan Yum Yum. (They also have a cookbook out that’s great).
I came across a recipe for “Hurry Up Alfredo,” which can be found here, and thought it sounded absolutely delicious. I subsequently bookmarked it and made a mental note to make it soon. Then, I forgot.
Until recently when I rediscovered it and decided to make it. Now, the first time I made this was back before Christmas, but I’ve made it a couple times now and have had people begging for the recipe. So I figured it is time to post it. Here’s my adaptation. Continue reading

I used to absolutely love york peppermint patties. delicious, rich, and melt-in-your-mouth… yumm! sadly, I haven’t had them since I went vegan.
…until recently, when a friend made them for a party. They were absolutely delicious! With some help from her and a recipe I found on the internet, I made my own batch.
It went something like this: Continue reading

Review: The Sprout House

Recently, I heard news of a brand new vegetarian/vegan food cart opening on the streets of Denver. I had to check it out, and went for lunch today, where I had a vegan grilled veggie pita.
The Good:

  • The food was definitely edible.
  • The cart is all vegetarian–no meat at all.
  • It is up-front about being vegan–even says it on the menu.
  • It provides awareness, however small, for the veg lifestyle.
  • All food and products are locally grown and sourced on the menu itself.

The Bad:

  • The food was only mediocre.
  • Only half of the items had a vegan option, while only two were vegan by nature. (I was really looking forward to Black Bean Sliders and Oatmeal Raisin cookies, but neither were vegan.)
  • The owner himself eats meat.

Overall, I give it 7/10.  I might go back and try something else, but don’t expect me to be a regular.

Nonetheless, I urge you to try it for yourself if you’re interested and give me your feedback as well. The cart is located Tuesday-Thursday from 11-3 at the corner of 17th Avenue and Lincoln.  You can check out more at twitter.com/thesprouthouse

Reason #2 I love being Vegan: It’s Healthier!

One 7News Journalist and her husband decided to go vegan see what the health benefits were. They found they had more energy and felt better, and found plenty of delicious food. They both lost weight and lowered levels of triglycerides, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Hmm… health benefits and a clean social conscience?  Go vegan.

Vegan Ice Cream at the Crushery

I had fantastic vegan ice cream tonight at the crushery–a little cafe off of South Pearl Street and Iowa.  They make ice cream to order with liquid nitrogen, using a coconut milk base (for vegan) and freezing it quickly with the liquid nitrogen.  not only does this sound cool, but it looks even cooler.

To top it off, you can add any mix-ins you like, cold stone style (watch out, not all are vegan-friendly). I went with a delicious cookies’n’cream.

The chef also let me know that they could make the ice cream with any kind of milk.  Got a craving for chocolate almond milk ice cream? Bring it down, with whatever mix-ins you like, and they’ll make it special for you (and not charge you full-price either).

The Crushery also has bagels which are vegan, fresh baked every morning.  Unfortunately, they don’t have any other vegan menu items, while the associate I spoke to admitted it was about time they did.  So keep bugging them and maybe we’ll get more vegan eats there.
